Ecosystem

BioCity are a Deep Branch investors. They have an expansive investment portfolio, specialising in young life science businesses, as well as operating 5 designated entrepreneur hubs around the UK. These hubs provide easy access spaces for rent as well as a plethora of support; integrating networks, running business programmes , providing press opportunities and pitching, exhibiting and speaking engagements with industry partners. This incubator approach aims to bridge the gap from start up to larger business, greatly improving the survival rate (91% in Nottingham) so that promising innovation has the chance to benefit the UK economy.

Deep Branch’s commercial team are based within PLNT, the Leiden Institute for innovation and entrepreneurship. PLNT is an entrepreneur hub providing work and events space to individuals and organizations engaged in innovation, creating a vibrant and supportive community on-site.

Deep Branch’s primary R&D facilities are based within the University of Nottingham’s Biodiscovery Institute (BDI). A £100 million expansion of the former Centre for Biomolecular Sciences, the BDI was launched in 2020 as a world-leading hub of interdisciplinary research excellence, home to nearly 1,000 talented academics, researchers, clinicians and other support staff.

nnovate UK are part of UK Research and Innovation, an executive non-departmental public body and funding agency, sponsored by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy. Deep Branch Biotechnology have been awarded Innovate UK funding in Open Call Round 3 to support the development and integration of the mobile prototype unit within Drax Power Group’s renewable energy plant, Yorkshire (UK). Deep Branch have also received funding through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund – Future Food Production Systems Competition for the collaborative REACT-FIRST project to bring Proton™ to market, with support of world-class partner facilities and associated expertise.

Innovate UK’s network partner, Knowledge Transfer Network, also works to accelerate UK economic growth and productivity by connecting innovators and businesses.

BBSRC is part of UK Research and Innovation, a new body which works in partnership with universities, research organisations, businesses, charities, and government to create the best possible environment for research and innovation to flourish. They aim to maximise the contribution of each of our component parts, working individually and collectively. They work with our many partners to benefit everyone through knowledge, talent and ideas.

They invested £498 million in world-class bioscience in 2017-18. We support around 1,600 scientists and 2,000 research students in universities and institutes across the UK.

Deep Branch are members of the Carbon Recycling Network (CCnet), one of 6 Networks in Industrial Biotechnology & Bioenergy funded by the BBSRC (BBSRC-NIBB). CCnet continues the work of the previous previous BBSRC-NIBB C1net in bringing together international gas fermentation expertise, while expanding to photosynthetic (cyanobacteria) and anaerobic digestion. It aims to bring together a cross-section of members from industry and academia.

Scale-Up

The Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) is a UK-government-funded innovation catalyst, with expertise in gas fermentation scale-up (evidenced in their work with Calysta). Deep Branch Biotechnology have benefitted from CPI support in the mobile pilot unit first phase development work. Continued work with CPI is focused on commercial scale up of operations for a continuous production plant, with integrated infrastructure considerations and engineering expertise leading the way.

Sustainability

Joint Research Centre (JRC), part of the EU Science Hub, has six sites in five EU countries (Brussels, Geel, Ispra, Karlsruhe, Petten, Seville). JRC have funded a project with the Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) of the University of Leiden to develop and apply new Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) tools. Deep Branch Biotechnology’s core CO₂-to-protein platform will be used to develop and exemplify these new tools, providing interesting statistics to further quantify the sustainability of the process.
